It was today in 1605 that ‘The Gunpowder Plot’ was uncovered by the new king of Great Britain James Stewart the first of England and sixth of Scotland. Robert Catesby led a group of Roman Catholics who perceived that faith to be persecuted and so planned to blow up the King and Queen.

Crowned as king of both kingdoms in 1603, James had refused concessions demanded by the Catholic faction and with his discovery of the plot the Scottish King finally won over his Protestant English subjects.

The day is commemorated and popularly as ‘Guy Fawkes Day’, Fawkes being one of the most zealous conspirators with Catesby.

November 5th is celebrated around Great Britain and Northern Ireland by bonfires and firework displays into the late evening.
